During the agency's last Directors' Meeting with Gordon Hazel in attendence, Jacqueline acknowledged Gordon for eighteen years of wonderful leadership. Hazel Passes JCEO Baton

Starting Monday October, 6th the Joint Council for Economic Opportunity of Clinton and Franklin Counties (JCEO) will be under new leadership. After eighteen years of service to Clinton County’s Community Action Agency, Executive Director Gordon Hazel will be handing over the baton.

“This is an exciting time for JCEO and I leave with mixed feelings,” Hazel said. ”It’s time for new leadership to take the wheel and I strongly believe that the best years for JCEO lie ahead.” Hazel came to JCEO from the private sector in 1990 after 22 years as an accountant for General Motors Corporation. “Working in human services has given me more opportunities than I can count to make a difference in people’s lives.  I’ve enjoyed every minute of it,” said Hazel. Under his leadership JCEO has fought to ameliorate the negative effects of poverty in the North Country. He said, “Community Action will continue to help our most vulnerable children, families and seniors through these tough economic times,” said Hazel. “JCEO’s success has never been about me. The mission is solid. The need is great, and I know the community will continue to support our cause in my absence.” After a year long battle with cancer, Hazel plans to continue the fight while spending more time with family and friends.

JCEO Board President, Steven Frederick, announced the position for Interim Executive Director will be filled by Jacqueline Skiff while the Board’s Executive Committee conducts a search for the new CEO.  Skiff has lead JCEO’s Head Start program for nearly two decades and looks forward to manning the helm.

CV TECH Food Drive

Missy Barcomb of CV TECH Skills USA surprised JCEO with a shipment of food for the pantry.  The classroom competition raised nearly 900 greatly needed food items.  Jenn Dashaw, JCEO's intake worker at the Food Pantry, was especially pleased. "Our shelves are always a little barren this time of year. People need extra help in the winter, and it shows by the increased usage." This food couldn't have come at a better time.  CV TECH also contributed a $180 donation. JCEO's ability to tap into the Regional Food Bank means this money will likely buy three times the food than could be bought locally. Every dollar makes a difference. Thank you CV-TECH! Your timing is impeccable.

Glens Falls National Supports Affordable Housing

Glens Falls National is Sponsoring Bank for Affordable Housing Subsidiary

By Timothy C. Badger, Marketing Director

The Federal Home Loan Bank of New York has awarded Glens Falls National Bank & Trust Co. a $240,000 subsidy through its Affordable Housing Program, to be used towards the development cost of the $6.36 million, 32 unit, White Pine Commons townhouse project to be located in the Town of Plattsburgh.

JCEO Executive Director Gordon Hazel is enthusiastic about the project saying, “JCEO has been helping the working poor, senior citizens, families and children for decades.  Providing a safe, affordable place to live is one more piece of the puzzle.  With a job, a warm home, and a safe playground for their kids, people can go beyond setting goals – they can start achieving them.   We’ve seen it work, and we are excited to see it work here.”

Therapy Donkey Visits Head Start

Head Start students at the Ward Hall Center made a new friend on Tuesday. Manzanita the Donkey let the 3 and 4 year olds pet her nose, but for a small fee - some apple treats. The female Donkey from Birch Nut Farms is part of an animal therapy program.  Research in the last two decades indicates that so called "pet therapy" has a cathartic, calming effect on people.  Do you ever talk to your pet? Animals of all kinds instigate communication, relaxation, and at the very least are loyal friends.  While Manzanita the Donkey was simply a friendly visitor, not part of any therapy, the children's smiles and excitement was proof enough that having animals around makes the day brighter.

PTK Honor Society - Dress For Success

Clinton Community College's chapter of Phi Theta Kappa reaches out again to low income families.  After a major professional clothing drive, they are proud to donate hundreds of items including suits, dress slacks, shoes and more to JCEO. "It's difficult sometimes for people to be taken seriously in an interview or when applying for work when you don't look the part," says Brandy Rivers of PTK. "It's a 'catch 22' in a way - can't get the job without the suit, can't get the suit without the job." Their efforts will dress hundreds of workers for success. Thanks PTK!

Back To School Drive

It's that time of year again. New notebooks, fresh pencils, rulers, crayons, erasers... Sending kids back to school is exciting, but ask any parent and they'll tell you it's also expensive.  For many low income families, spending $50 per child barely scratches the surface. JCEO is pleased to say that thanks to our very generous community, the school supplies are coming in strong! We have collected enough money and supplies to help many local children go to school armed and ready to learn. Kids: Sharpen your pencils and your minds! Good luck with the 2006-7 school year!

Golf Ball Drop 2005

JCEO would like to thank all those who generously contributed to the first Golf Ball Drop. On October first, 915 numbered golf balls were dropped from the air over the driving range at the Adirondack Golf and Country club in Peru. Although not all 3000 balls were sold this year, the event was a fantastic success.

The JCEO Foundation is pleased to be able to award prizes to four lucky winners. Tim Dodd (#399) won “closest to the hole” and a grand total of $3,500.  Amy House (# 1598) won $1,000 for “second closest to the hole,” Marion Soper (#516) won $500 for “third closest,” and Debbie Bombard was pleased to have her ball (#26) land furthest from the hole which won her $500. The funds raised from this exciting event will benefit the Big Buddy mentoring program.

A special thank you is extended to the Adirondack Golf and Country Club for the use of their facilities and golf balls, and Keeseville Fire Chief, Lenny Martin, for donating both time and the aerial fire truck that served as our drop vehicle. A sincere thank you goes out to local businesses willing to allow entry forms in their store fronts, and to the many, many local businesses who bought golf balls in support of Big Buddy. Most of all, thank you to all of the generous individuals who, in supporting this fundraiser, have contributed to a much needed, wonderful mentoring program.

Keeseville Fire Chief, Lenny Martin (assisted by 12 yr old Kevin Dashnaw) listen as Gordon Hazel counts down the final seconds until they drop the 915 Golf Balls from a height of over 65 feet.
